TollFree Call Routing Platform
Client: US Voice & Data Telecommunications Carrier
The Challenge
The customer needed a high-performance routing platform capable of processing extremely high volumes of toll-free number lookups while maintaining strict latency and availability requirements.
The platform also needed to work alongside the customer's existing telecom infrastructure without disrupting live operations.
Key challenges included:
- High transaction volume: The platform needed to handle hundreds of millions of API requests every month.
- Low-latency requirements: Routing decisions had to be delivered quickly to support real-time telecom operations.
- Complex routing logic: The system needed to support configurable business rules, carrier-specific logic, overrides, and dynamic routing decisions.
- High availability: As part of a mission-critical telecom workflow, the platform needed to remain reliable under continuous traffic.
- Future scalability: The architecture needed sufficient capacity to support significant growth in transaction volumes.
- Integration constraints: The new platform had to integrate with the existing telecom ecosystem without disrupting ongoing operations.
The challenge was therefore to build a high-throughput routing engine that could make real-time decisions at telecom scale while remaining flexible, reliable, and compatible with the customer's existing infrastructure.
Our Approach
We partnered with the customer to design and develop a scalable routing platform that complemented the existing telecom ecosystem rather than requiring a disruptive replacement. Our solution focused on:
1. Built a High-Performance Routing Engine
We developed the core routing engine using Go, optimized for high-throughput API processing and low-latency routing decisions.
The platform processes toll-free lookup requests and applies configurable routing logic to determine the appropriate routing outcome.
The architecture was designed to efficiently handle sustained high transaction volumes while maintaining consistent response performance.
2. Implemented Configurable Routing Logic
We developed a flexible routing framework capable of supporting:
- Business-specific routing rules
- Carrier-specific routing logic
- Carrier overrides
- Dynamic routing decisions
- Configurable routing behavior
This allowed routing behavior to evolve with changing business and carrier requirements without requiring fundamental changes to the platform architecture.
3. Designed for High Availability and Scale
The platform was designed to support significant increases in transaction volumes while maintaining performance and reliability.
The architecture currently supports more than 600 million API requests per month and was designed with capacity to scale beyond 2 billion requests per month.
The solution leveraged both on-premises infrastructure and public cloud environments, allowing it to operate effectively within the customer's existing technology landscape.
4. Introduced Platform Observability
We implemented an observability stack using Prometheus, Grafana, and Graylog to monitor system performance, infrastructure health, application behavior, and operational events.
This provided engineering teams with greater visibility into platform performance and enabled faster identification and resolution of potential issues.
5. Automated Infrastructure and Delivery
We used Ansible to support infrastructure automation and configuration management, helping standardize deployment and operational processes across environments.
Development and project workflows were managed through GitHub Projects, supporting structured delivery and collaboration with the customer's engineering team.
6. Integrated with the Existing Telecom Ecosystem
Rather than replacing the customer's existing infrastructure, the routing platform was designed to integrate with the systems already supporting telecom operations.
We worked closely with the customer's engineering team throughout implementation to ensure compatibility, minimize operational disruption, and facilitate ongoing ownership and enhancement.
"When I engaged with Teamextn we had no idea about the abilities he and his team had. As we started interacting we discovered, they understand the industry and more importantly they have brilliant engineers. Before kicking off the project the architecture and technology stack were not based on the bleeding edge technologies they were rather based on our internal teams expertise. This was true on the deployment side as well. He understood how other applications and services were deployed and not off the cuff technology names just because he wanted to be the cool kid. The quality of work and timely delivery were the highlights of our engagement. This was very important to us because our clients are business to large enterprise clients. We definitely recommend working with Teamextn and are looking to have a continued long term engagement."
